In April 1999, ABC premiered The Big Moment. Hosted by Whose Line Is It Anyway?''s Brad Sherwood, it gave ordinary people a week to master a difficult task before they're flown to the studio to perform the task. If they're successful, they'll win $25,000 in cash and prizes for themselves and their family (or group).
Some of the show's tasks included reciting pi to the 100th decimal point, identifying 12 Baskin-Robbins ice cream flavors in two minutes while blindfolded, and yanking a table cloth from a dinner setting without disturbing any part of the setting.
The show, based on Japanese game Happy Family Plan, lasted only ten episodes, with the run time for the final eight episodes reduced from 60 minutes to 30. The show was cancelled on June 26.
The show would have a much better go in the United Kingdom as The Moment of Truth (not to be confused with the controversial game show of the same name in the late 2000s). Hosted by comedic actress and singer Cilla Black, the show lasted for four seasons from 1998 to 2001.
Happy Family Plan was so popular in Japan, a movie based on the game show would be released in 1998. The show aired 91 episodes on Tokyo Broadcasting System from 1997 to 2000.
